Traditional parties and office cocktail hours may be a throwback during the COVID-19 era, but there’s still no good reason why you can’t say cheers to family and friends with a Zoom happy hour this season. All you really need is a computer or smartphone, high-speed WiFi, and a well-stocked liquor cabinet.
“Connection has been the thing that we’ve needed most this year,” says Felicia Chavez, a certified spirits specialist at JVS Wine Imports in Southern California. “Seeing everyone’s faces is important. Seeing your besties, your mom and dad, or your fave cousin makes a difference!”

To host your own virtual happy hour, Chavez suggests choosing one drink that everybody can make together. You could also hire a professional mixologist to teach your nearest and dearest how to whip up a hand-crafted cocktail at home online.
“Obviously, Zoom has been the biggest trend of 2020,” says Chavez. “So that’s always an easy way to go. It’s really fun to choose one signature cocktail that everyone can make virtually together, as long as everyone can gather all of the ingredients. Or hire a mixologist to teach a class and have everyone pick up cocktail kits at one central location.”

Another option to consider–if your guests live miles apart–is to let everybody choose their favorite adult beverage to make instead. “The most important thing is just having a good time with your friends and family,” says Chavez “If everyone makes a different cocktail, it is fun to have each person share what they’ve made and maybe even vote on whose cocktail was the most creative!”
