Soft waves are a hairstyle that’s perfect for virtually any summer outfit. A gently wind-tossed, salt-kissed look evokes that carefree, effortlessly chic vibe of long sunny days spent by the shore. And this summer, mermaid waves–and Mermaidcore everything–are making a big splash.

While they do look something like beachy waves, mermaid waves have a more uniform movement and an S-shape. They look more finished and intentional and add a touch of polish and sophistication to a summer outfit.

Mermaid Waves

Supplies

  • Brush or comb for parting your hair
  • Crimper or wide-barreled curling iron
  • Heat protectant
  • Medium-hold hair gel

Instructions

Step 1: Begin with completely dry hair, and create a center part.

Step 2: Add heat protectant and crimp into large waves. You can use a crimper, or you can use the crimping technique using a curling iron described below.

Step 3: Using medium-hold hair gel, rake through the ends first, working your way toward the roots and face-framing sections.

Step 4: Tuck one side behind the ear

Crimping With A Curling Iron

Don’t have a crimper? No worries! You can still get the beachy wave look with a curling iron. Here’s what to do.

Step 1: With a wide-barreled curling iron, clamp hair close to the root from the underside, then release and move down the hair. You will want to clamp this section of hair over the barrel of your curling iron.

Step 2: Flip the iron over and clamp further down the hair. You want this section of your hair to go under the curling iron.

Step 3: Keep alternating clamp position until you’ve reached the end of your hair section.

Step 4: Repeat in wide, thin sections until your hair is completely crimped.
