how to throw a halloween party

There’s really nothing better than Halloween. It comes at the best time of the year (hello, fall!) and gives us an opportunity to get a little scared, have an excuse to eat an endless amount of candy, and be someone else for a night. We love it, we can’t get enough of it, and we wish it happened all year. So what better way to honor the spooky season than with a fabulous party?

Whether you’ve been anxiously waiting to show off your decorating, makeup, and costume skills (like us!) or you want to throw something quick together for your friends last minute, we’re here to help with Halloween party ideas you won’t want to miss. We’ve got everything you need to eat, drink, be scary, and throw a chic and spooky fete!

More Boos, Please

We love to throw a party with a theme, and a signature cocktail to serve throughout the night is a must. So, if you’re going for a traditional spooky Halloween theme we recommend serving our Black Widow or Spooky Sangria, complete with dry ice.

Or, if you’re thinking of a more open-ended fall holiday theme, our Spiked Pumpkin Spiced Latte is perfect! These can both be made in large quantities, or without the booze, depending on your crew! They’re scary-refreshing and sure to send a chill down your spine.

Killer Food

A good spread of appetizers always keeps guests happy and satisfied, especially if you’re serving alcohol. And Halloween is a great excuse to get creative with your spread.

We love setting out a large, eye-catching charcuterie board for an elegant Halloween party idea. Or, for a more interactive idea, consider setting up a make-your-own pizza station for a fun activity everyone can do together. Did someone say jack-o-lantern pizza?

Keep the snacks going throughout the night with fresh fruit, veggies, and some infused waters, and get creative by giving your snacks funny Halloween names or using cookie cutters to cut fruits and veggies into spooky shapes. And of course, don’t forget the candy!

To Die-For Candy and Desserts

We’re all kids at heart, and of course, Halloween is all about the treats (check out these adorably spooky ghost cupcakes and dirt dessert cups)! We love setting out candy in glass jars with varying sizes and shapes on the table and throughout the house for an elevated, chic look! At the Picket Fence has a fun DIY using apothecary jars

You can even do your own homemade Halloween candy! Delish has some super easy and delicious recipes, that you can make ahead to really impress your guests, or do as a party activity with your kids. For added flair, label each jar with different themed gross-out items (like eyeballs, worms, and spiders, for example).

Bone-Chilling Decor

Your Halloween party is all about you and your vision of a perfect Halloween. So, your decorations can be as chic and minimal, or campy and scary as you like! We recommend focusing on one central area, such as the dining table, and working your way out from there.

Hallstrom Home has some gorgeous ideas for classy-yet-spooky tablescapes. We also love painted and glitter-dipped pumpkins for an elegant theme. Good Housekeeping has plenty of on-trend and easy-to-make ideas for the season, too. You can also pick a color scheme (we went with black, white, and grey with gold accents) and visit stores like Michaels, or JOANN to curate the perfect party vibe with inexpensive decorations you can use year after year!
